Experience and celebrate the music of Mike Oldfield
Mike Oldfield's musical career started as a young teenage folk guitarist, performing with his sister Sally, and rose to fame in 1973 when he composed his Opus One: Tubular Bells. With the mentoring of record producer Tom Newman, this album launched Sir Richard Branson's Virgin Records label, and the rest is history.
Following Hergest Ridge, Ommadawn and Incantations, Mike's albums would be a combination of long-form instrumental works, where he would often play most of the instruments, with influences ranging from folk music, African drumming and singing, Prog Rock and developing technologies in his recording studios. Songs such as Moonlight Shadow are always on the radio, his 1979 reworking of the Blue Peter theme inspired Phil Toms to become a multi-instrumentalist in his bedroom recording studio, and Mike was honoured by being invited to perform a medley of his music at the 2012 London Olympics.
Mike is now officially retired and lives in the Bahamas, and whilst Tubular Bells Live is not affiliated with him officially, we are proud to share and celebrate his music around the country and entertain very happy audiences!
Tubular Bells Live has been performing since our original concerts and fan convention in Colchester in 2015, where we were gratefully supported on stage by Tom Newman, OG guitarist Jay Stapley, bass player Phil Spalding, MC Roger Eno and, via video, Sir Richard Branson.
Phil and the band are an active part of the Mike Oldfield fan community, especially on Facebook groups such as “Tubular World” and performed live at the 45th and 50th anniversary fan conventions. Our audiences travel far and wide (including internationally from Europe, Scandinavia and Brazil) as well as across the UK.
